Understanding Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) Grant

Understanding Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) Grant

Among the many benefits that the Department of Veterans Affairs offers to all eligible veterans with service-connected disabilities, the grant for TRA is available to modify one’s family member’s home for wheelchair access and mobility.

Eligibility Criteria

Veterans must be entitled under SAH or SHA but temporarily reside in a family member’s home to be eligible for the Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) Grant.

Grant Amounts

For those eligible in fiscal year 2024, the SAH Grant is up to $23,444, and the TRA Grant reaches as high as $8,415. These figures are adjusted yearly for inflation in the cost of construction.

Specific Requirements or Limitations

The grant can be used to retrofit a family member’s home to improve access and mobility. It includes modifications such as installing ramps and widening doorways, among other effects directly related to the veteran’s disability. The maximum number of uses for this grant is three times; however, it must be at most the maximum allowable assistance. Modifications must also address the veteran’s problems and improve the veteran’s quality of life in the temporary residence.
